Dexterity and technical mastery are criteria by which artists are often evaluated, but mater is an early example for how this artist unified the formal aspects of sculpture with a more psychological exploration. Here, the banal tradition of the female torso was revisited in order to illicit the associations of materiality, language, and emotion that are inherent to gender divisions in the artist/model dynamic.
